  • Joint implementation of large-scale PV projects by ENVIRIA and MOON POWER, combining solar power and charging infrastructure at automotive sites

  • Two installations near Munich with a combined capacity of over 2 MWp will supply Audi & VGRD (Volkswagen Group Retail Deutschland) dealerships with ~2.3 million kWh of solar power annually, cutting more than 1,000 tons of CO2 emissions

  • Further projects to advance sustainable energy in the automotive sector are already in development

Frankfurt am Main, 04 September 2025Solar company ENVIRIA and MOON POWER, a provider of smart charging and energy solutions, have jointly realized two photovoltaic projects at Audi and Volkswagen Group Retail Germany (VGRD) sites. The goal: to use locally generated solar energy both for the dealerships’ operations and their e-mobility infrastructure. With a combined capacity of over 2 MWp, the systems will generate around 2.3 million kWh of renewable electricity annually – a significant step in reducing CO2 emissions and supporting the automotive industry’s sustainable transformation.

The urgency of decarbonization in transport and buildings

Transport accounts for about 20% of Germany’s greenhouse gas emissions, making it one of the largest contributors (Umweltbundesamt, 2025). The building sector adds another ~100.5 million tons of CO2 equivalents, or 15–16% of total national emissions (Treibhausgas-Projektionen 2025 – Ergebnisse kompakt).

Meeting the Paris climate targets requires a 65% reduction in emissions from both sectors by 2030 compared to 1990 levels. With projected investments of €540 billion into e-mobility and sustainability by 2029 (Verband der Automobilindustrie, 2025), the German automotive industry demonstrates both the urgency and the potential of renewable energy solutions for this transition.

To reach these goals, sustainable electricity supply for charging infrastructure is just as critical as expanding e-mobility itself. This is where ENVIRIA and MOON POWER come in: by combining large-scale solar systems with integrated EV charging, the partners are delivering solutions that not only advance e-mobility in Germany but also improve the carbon footprint through locally generated renewable power.

First projects already grid connected

The first joint projects have been completed in the Munich region. At the Audi Gebrauchtwagen :plus Center in Eching, a rooftop PV system covering ~7,000 m² is now in operation. It produces nearly 1.8 million kWh of electricity annually, cutting 852 tons of CO2 each year.

At the Audi Zentrum München, another PV installation has been connected, generating about half a million kWh per year and reducing the site’s CO2 footprint by 220 tons annually. The dealership can now cover 45% of its energy needs with its own solar power. Together, the two systems reach over 2 MWp in capacity and ~2.3 million kWh of yearly production. Both locations have also been equipped with DC fast chargers and multiple internal charging points – all powered by solar energy from the rooftops.

Tailored energy solutions for the automotive industry

The partnership between ENVIRIA and MOON POWER combines complementary expertise to deliver tailored energy concepts for automotive sites. Melchior Schulze Brock, founder and CEO of ENVIRIA, explains: “Through our collaboration, we create integrated energy solutions that combine solar and EV charging infrastructure, delivering both economic and environmental value for each site. Our ambition is to transform every property into a powerful and largely self-sufficient energy hub – with higher self-supply, lower emissions, and full control over locally generated energy. The focus is always on a holistic concept that fits seamlessly into existing structures.”

Kilian Becker, Site Manager at MOON POWER, adds: “As a holistic provider of smart charging and energy solutions, we connect charging infrastructure, photovoltaics, and energy management into one coherent system. Together with ENVIRIA, we are realizing forward-looking projects that support the growth of e-mobility while sustainably improving efficiency and climate performance at sites both within and beyond the Volkswagen Group.”

By combining their strengths, both companies are helping drive the decarbonization of the automotive industry. Additional joint projects are already in preparation.
